Why Choose In-Home Speech Therapy?
In my 9+ years as a Speech Language Pathologist, I've worked across a variety of treatment settings. Here's why home-based speech therapy might be my favorite:
1.) Motivation
Speech therapy is all about motivation, and nothing is more exciting than a child's own toys, games, and books! When the child has the power to select and share their favorite activities, therapy targets can naturally be embedded in the chosen activity. A 9 year old perfecting /r/? That new graphic novel is a great opportunity to work on speech sounds in sentences. A toddler who loves the sandbox? We can model and encourage core vocabulary words like "in, out, dump."
2.) Comfort
Kids learn best in their natural environment. Home is a child's safe space, and when a child is comfortable, their brains are in the ideal state for them to to take risks, try new strategies, and refine their communication skills.
3.) Involvement
Family are a child's most important communication partners! By providing services in the home, the therapist can model strategies for parents and siblings to try and apply throughout the week. This gives the child increased opportunities to generalize their skills across multiple settings and situations, leading to faster results.
4.) Relevance
Communication isn't just who we are talking to, but what we are talking about. In the home, our family members, pets, toys, and routines are among the most common topics of conversation. A late talker could be very motivated to combine 2-3 words to give the dog a command ("Spot, sit!"), or a young child could practice saying their sibling's name using target speech sounds ("that's not Tarter, it's Carter"). It doesn't get more functional than that!
5.) Convenience
Families are already over-scheduled. Having the therapist come to you means that you don't have to pack up the entire family, align with siblings' extracurriculars and nap times, or allot for travel in your already busy day. This frees up a little more of your family's most precious commodity: time!
